Chikankari

Chikan literally translates to embroidery. Chikankari is believed to have been started by Noor Jehan. It is one of the finest handwork embroideries and is very delicate and artful. The earliest known references to Chikankari are from 3rd Century BC, when Indians were said to have been draped in flowered muslins. The city of Nawabs, Lucknow, is the centre for Chikankari in India now. 

Chikankari is usually done with a white thread on cool pastel shades. The fabrics used are cottons, muslins and silk. In recent times, the embroideries are also being done using coloured threads. There are a verity of stitches used in creating the embroideries and the designs and patterns depend on the thickness of the thread.
